Chapter Sixteen

Laura rubbed the back of her neck, forcing down the headache that was distracting her. Charles asked if she was okay. She shrugged him off with a lame apology and went to find some privacy.

There wasn’t available. The position they were defending wasn’t large. She looked around, hoping for something to hunt. All she saw were her friends, family, and soldiers working for Walker or Young.

Meanwhile, her cravings grew.

She started for her brother, strongly considering asking him to restrain her. The prospect was humiliating, but she couldn’t live with the consequences of losing control. When she slept, she had nightmares about attacking somebody she knew and drinking their blood.

It was a completely unfair dilemma. The Fosk-ha cryo-virus changed her metabolism so that she could survive long voyages on one of the alien ships by metabolizing the dark sludge they used for nutrition during hibernation.

But their fleets were long gone. All that was left of the invaders were these monsters and desperate troops who had been left behind during the chaos.

“Laura, are you okay?” Young’s voice startled her, even though he was the best possible person she could talk to right now. Once, he had let her taste his blood. A blood donation to keep her from losing her mind.

She could still taste the sweetness, the rush of energy that overwhelmed her senses. Her hunger stirred, but she clamped down it. No—she couldn’t ask that of him, not again.

“I’m not good, Travis,” she said, shrinking away.

“I can see that.” He looked around. No one was close enough to overhear them. “Do you need me to help you again?”

She wanted to scream or cry or maybe both. “My whole body hurts. I need to hunt something.” Explaining her reluctance was more than she could bear right now.

“Let’s see if we can find you a donor,” Young said, obviously much more uncomfortable than he acted. “I’ll watch for anyone not minding their business.”

“Are you sure about this?”

Laura felt like everyone was watching her. Shadows filled the forest thrusting up from the rocky slopes. She knew there had to be wildlife everywhere. This wasn’t the first time she had to satiate her need. For some reason, this felt much different. Maybe it was because the people she cared about were nearby and might witness the monster she became when no one was looking.

Her appearance didn’t change—or, she didn’t think it did. Most of this was in her head and she knew it. That didn’t make it easier. She’d do anything or go anywhere to escape this living hell.

Young handed her some trail mix and beef jerky.

“What’s this for?”

“I think there’s a den of raccoons about twenty paces from us. I bet you can coax one of them out with the bribe,” he said.

Laura took the food, sent her thoughts away for a while, and did what she had to do.
